What We Have Learned…

FJC learned in August, that the City of Redding’s proposed project for constructing a trail through the Jenny Creek open space, is in application with the City of Redding Planning Department for review and a final CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act legal requirements) document to be completed.

The Planning Department on October 8, 2025, reported to FJC that the review process may take a few months to be completed by the Planning staff. After its review it would then move to a 30-day Public Comment period before the CEQA document is presented to the Planning Commission to determine if it can be permitted.

FJC will update this website as we learn more details

FJC opposes the following points for a “proposed trail”

  • The City of Redding (COR) proposes to construct a 8-16 foot wide, paved, and lighted trail through the Jenny Creek open space through terrain that is very steep and would interfere with the habitat, wildlife and impose public access near residential properties.

  • The proposed northern part of the trail would connect through the steepest area of open space with an 80-foot wide bridge over the creek to meet up with the existing Overhill Trail, which already connects to the Sacramento River Trail. In addition, at least three other small precast concrete bridges are proposed to be built over ephemeral streams in the open space.

  • Already there are over 215 miles of trails within a 15-mile radius of Redding for biking, walking and hiking to serve our community.

And, trails that are in place now are not being maintained for lack of City funds and employees to do the maintenance.

  • This unneeded trail would add increased and unwanted public access, thereby making the open space, habitat, wildlife and the homes and families surrounding it vulnerable to crime and fire.

It is our goal as residents and stewards of our open space surroundings, to stand up for the protection and preservation of Jenny Creek and the natural, healthy oak woodland habitat, its wildlife and its human inhabitants.

Who we are…

Friends of Jenny Creek is a non-profit, community organization created to inform friends and neighbors living in Lower & Upper Sunset in West Redding and the Redding area, of a “proposed trail” City of Redding wants to construct between these residential neighborhoods going through the Jenny Creek Open Space…

Friends of Jenny Creek opposes a proposed trail being constructed inside the Jenny Creek open space.

Friends of Jenny Creek is alternately suggesting the City of Redding redirect their plan by using existing trails already connecting to the Sacramento River Trail. This would allow less expense to the City and provide a mindful preservation to the Jenny Creek Open Space.
